One of the key events during this feast is the remarkably long procession that snakes through the streets of Quiapo, a quaint town in Metro Manila. During the procession, thousands of pilgrims march through the streets carrying the statue.

It is almost impossible to miss the fact that the participants are always barefoot. This is an act of humility and honour. Additionally, the men keep chanting ‘Viva Señor’. Locals and visitors in the vicinity of the procession attempt to touch the statue believing that this delivers miracles. The sheer number of people on the streets, however, makes this task quite hectic for the many participants in attendants.

It is amazing to think that that the Black Nazarene has a long history that dates back more than 200 years ago, with tales chronicling that missionaries brought the icon from Spain. The statue is housed in Quiapo at the Saint John the Baptist Church. The Feast of the Black Nazarene 2018 is a must-attend while in the City of Manila.
