At the core of the festival is the characteristic star lantern, perhaps the ultimate depiction of Christmas. The lanterns have vibrant colours, are created meticulously and capture the spirit of the December season. The week-long Giant Lantern Festival 2017 starts on mid-December and ends on the first week of January. It is a significant festival that marks the start of the Christmas season in the Philippines.

At the onset of Giant Lantern Festival 2017, the lanterns were made of a steel frame and lined with cardboard before the thousands of bulbs were fitted. Over the years, however, the lantern has evolved to create simple lanterns that participants could create on their own.

The lanterns are simple and are made of paper that is attached to a bamboo framework. Rice glue is used to attach the two. The simplicity of the lanterns stands out, yet the underlying message of illumination remains the same.

During the festival, different entries are submitted and the winning lanterns are celebrated. However you would like to enjoy this event, the Giant Lantern Festival 2017 is a must-attend.
